Kally Pinto - The Educator
Teaching Experience and Qualification
I hold a current teaching qualification and registration after completing my graduate diploma in education (secondary) in 2016. I have since taught at several schools in Perth and in the Pilbara including high schools and primary schools. This has given me a range of diverse experiences in educating K – 12 students in science and includes the general science strands from K – 10 and ATAR and general subjects in year 11 and 12.
My Specialisations
Chemistry
Before pursuing teaching, I studied a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) and Graduate Certificate in Health Promotion. My nutrition degree encompassed extensive knowledge of general chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and other areas. As such I was able to translate this knowledge into education when I studied teaching, and I am qualified to teach ATAR Chemistry to year 11 and 12 students.
Human Biology
Throughout my nutrition and health promotion degrees I also completed a large number of units related to human anatomy and physiology, metabolism, exercise physiology, community health, population health, microbiology, pathophysiology, and other areas. As such, I am also qualified in my teaching to teach ATAR Human Biology to year 11 and 12 students.
Psychology
Throughout my nutrition, health promotion and teaching degrees, I have also completed a number of units relating to behaviour and psychology. I have studied units in behavioural and personality psychology related to habits and behaviour change and have completed units related to educational psychology including learning theories and conditions. As such, I am qualified to teach ATAR Psychology to year 11 and 12 students.
Becoming a Tutor – The Idea
I decided to start Science Support WA as a private tutoring business after becoming a mother in 2023. I am searching for more flexibility in my schedule, a greater challenge in my professional life and something that I perceive to be a greater reward.
I want to work with students who want to achieve their goals. I want to work with families who value education. I want to be the person that has the time, energy, and patience to work one-on-one or in small groups with students as they come to understand content that they previously thought impossible to conquer. As a teacher, there is a large demand to meet the needs of all students in your class at the same time, every lesson while behaviour managing, keeping an eye on your emails, dealing with the ten things that just went wrong, sitting with the three students who need your support to read the questions while another five rush ahead and want more work. Teaching in a large classroom setting is no short of an amazing feat whether you’re a seasoned teacher or a graduate. I however have come to believe that this environment no longer supports students to learn in the ways it should and doesn’t provide enough opportunity for individual students to learn.
By starting Science Support WA, I am making an opportunity for myself to step away from that stressful, pressured environment and provide an environment for students that is conducive to learning at their pace and in a way that supports their level of understanding, learning style, personality, and learning needs. As a tutor, I can ensure the needs of my students are met specifically, every session, for the whole session until they meet their goals. I can ensure my entire focus is on supporting the one student in front of me instead of the ten that don’t want to be in the room, five that need more support than I can give in a classroom environment and ten that aren’t being challenged due to the pace we must move through lessons.
